On the hook and off again

It was bucketing down by the time she reached the harbour and walked out along the breakwater. She had borrowed an old raincoat hanging on a rack inside her grandmother’s front door, and found an umbrella inside a cupboard, but it was that slowly falling type of heavy rain, which seemed to soak her regardless. Grandma had had the daintiest of feet, so her Wellington boots had been too tight a squeeze for Rachel, and now her trainers were soaked, water squishing between her toes as she walked out to where William sat huddled on his deckchair.

‘Hello,’ she called over the relentless patter of the rain and the crash of the swell on the breakwater wall as curtains of spray splashed across her. ‘I just came down here to say thanks again for getting me out of that horrible cast.’

William looked up. In the shadows beneath the hood of his coat, his expression was unreadable. ‘You’re welcome,’ he said.

Rachel took a step closer, wincing as her foot slipped into a pothole, cold water sloshing over her ankle.

‘I was wondering if I could talk to you about something,’ she said.

William shrugged. He shifted the rod on his knees, revealing that once more no line hung through its hoops. If he said anything, it was lost beneath the sound of the rain.

Rachel hooked a thumb back over her shoulder, grimacing as a dribble of water ran up her forearm, soaking one of her few previously dry places.

‘You see that café over there? I pre-ordered two pasties, two scones, and two large coffees. You don’t have to come, but as a doctor, you’ll have to deal with the guilt of my cholesterol level for the rest of your life if you don’t. If you do come, you at least can save me a little by eating half, and perhaps even a bit of my pasty’s crust, because I usually struggle with it. What do you say?’

For a moment William just stared at her. Then, from under the hood Rachel caught a glimpse of a small smile.

‘Sure,’ he said.
